FIRST SUCCESSFUL COMBINED LIVER AND KIDNEY TRANSPLANT (LIVE DONOR) IN INDIA DURING PANDEMIC

Delhi to Chennai, a journey from Despair to Hope ~

Chennai, October 21st, 2020: Gleneagles Global Health City (GGHC), a leading multi-organ transplant centre in Asia successfully performed India’s first liver and kidney transplant during the Covid-19 pandemic with help from two live donors.

35-year-old Mr. Mittal was airlifted to GGHC from Delhi with a medical history of a renal failure & chronic liver problem (fatty liver) which necessitated an urgent need for kidney & liver transplant. During his treatment at a hospital facility in New Delhi, the doctors decided to defer the transplant surgery due to patient’s health condition as he was also suffering from cardiac shock and low BP. However, the family was apprehensive and contacted GGHC’s liver transplant team for a second opinion and decided to get medical treatment at GGHC, Chennai. The entire transit process from Delhi to Chennai was seamlessly co-ordinated as it was highly challenging since the patient had multiple complications and was also obese (130 kgs).

Upon arrival at GGHC, the patient was in an unconscious state with low BP and had to be kept on dialysis. The medical team at GGHC examined him and observed fungal growth in his blood along with other multiple complications and he was therefore admitted in the specialized liver ICU unit for 2 weeks and was provided with necessary supportive medical care including anti-fungal treatment and 24/7 dialysis for 3-4 days. Meanwhile, a complete medical evaluation was carried out on the patient’s wife and sister to assess their viability for being the liver donor and kidney donor respectively.
Speaking about the success of the surgery – Dr Joy Varghese, Director – Hepatology & Transplant Hepatology, Gleneagles Global Health City said “The combined live donor liver & kidney transplant surgery which involved a team of liver, renal and critical care specialists went on for more than 14 hours. After the successful dual organ transplant surgery, patient regained consciousness and later came to know from his family about being airlifted to Chennai and his treatment at GGHC. Patient was discharged from the hospital on the 16th day post surgery. Patient as well as his sister and wife are hale & healthy.”

“This type of complicated surgery was possible only because of dedicated multidisciplinary approach of the hospital. I would like to thank Mr Nitin for being very positive and brave. My special thanks to his wife and sister for their strong will and motivation to save the patient and also trusting us. This case gives a good insight into our culture and great family values in our country and ‘never give up’ attitude by near & dear ones” – stated Dr Rajanikanth Patcha, Clinical Lead – Liver Transplant Surgery, Gleneagles Global Health City.

“We leveraged advanced cardiac output monitoring to improve patient’s blood pressure and removed close to 20 litres of excess fluid from his body. A dedicated team of critical care specialists and nurses made sure that the patient and both the donors remained safe from COVID infection”, said Dr Selvakumar Malleeswaran, Head of Liver ICU – Gleneagles Global Health City.
“We were confronted with many challenges in performing the living donor renal transplant during the pandemic. Both the patient and donor were obese, highest level of infection control measures had to be implemented and there was a need for continuous coordination among multiple consultants, technicians, paramedics & support staff. We faced a big challenge in performing dialysis for the patient with such low BP and had to perform ‘Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy’ before & during the surgery. Taking the best possible pre-surgical precautions, we could do keyhole kidney retrieval from the renal donor and successfully transplant the same into the recipient. In-spite of many odds, kidney started producing urine immediately after implantation. The positivity of the donors and recipient aided in their quick and smooth recovery” – added Dr K Muruganandham, Senior Consultant – Urology and Renal Transplantation Surgeon & Dr P Muthukumar, Senior Consultant – Nephrology & Renal Transplant Physician, Gleneagles Global Health City.

Congratulating the team on the success, Dr Alok Khullar, CEO – Gleneagles Global Health City, Chennai, said “The determination of both donors and their iron strong resolve supported by the extended family to save the life of their loved one were instrumental in motivating the entire team of GGHC to give their best quality care. The multi-disciplinary approach coupled with technical expertise helped us to ensure the success of the surgery despite various challenges. This successful outcome is bound to give hope to many patients with debilitating conditions and complications and help them live healthier lives.”

The pioneering transplant was led by Dr Joy Varghese, Director – Hepatology & Transplant Hepatology, Dr Rajanikanth Patcha, Clinical Lead – Liver Transplant Surgery, Gleneagles Global Health City, Dr Selvakumar Malleeswaran, Head of Liver ICU, Dr K Muruganandham, Senior Consultant – Urology and Renal Transplantation Surgeon & Dr P Muthukumar, Senior Consultant – Nephrology & Renal Transplant Physician”.

KAUVERY HOSPITAL PERFORMS INDIA’S FIRST SINGLE STAGE HYBRID CORONARY REVASCULARISATION PROCEDURE (BYPASS SURGERY AND STENTING)

Chennai 9th October 2020: Kauvery Hospital, Chennai’s leading multi-specialty hospital, successfully performed the India’s first single stage hybrid coronary revascularisation procedure on a 44-year-old male from Nesapakkam.

Mr. Ramesh V, had visited Kauvery Hospital with a history of heart attack, blockage in multiple arteries and limited heart function of 30%, which required immediate surgical intervention. Traditionally, blood flow in patients with multiple coronary blockage is restored by coronary artery bypass grafting surgery (CABG) through sternotomy (Opening Breast Bone) which requires longer recuperation time at the hospital and increased risk of infection, especially during a pandemic.

Speaking about performing the India’s first Hybrid revascularization procedure, Dr. R Anantharaman, Senior Consultant Interventional Cardiologist said, “Undertaking a complex procedure and enabling the patient to walk back home within a span of two to three days is a huge step in treatment and provides a lot of hope for patients with such conditions. We at Kauvery Hospitals were able to perform this with the aid of the Hybrid Cath Lab thereby minimizing the risks, as only such a facility can facilitate the procedure to be performed in a single stage both surgery and stenting at the same time.

We made a small cut (3-4 cm) on the left side of chest through which the main bypass grafting for the left coronary artery was performed. After the successful completion of bypass surgery, its functioning was checked by angiography, which was followed by angioplasty and stenting to the right coronary artery. The same procedure was subsequently performed on two more patients – Mr. Sanjay, aged 54 years and Mrs. Narmadha M, aged 70 years. All the patients were discharged within a span of two to three days.”

Speaking on the success of the case, Dr. Aravindan Selvaraj, Executive Director, Kauvery Hospital, Chennai, said, “I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Dr. R Anantharaman and his team for setting a benchmark in India’s medical history by performing a minimally invasive hybrid revascularization procedure in a single stage. The Hybrid Cath Lab at Kauvery Hospital has ushered in many revolutionary procedures and helping in faster recovery for our patients. We always commit ourselves to bring in the latest technologies to provide the best possible treatment at all times. In this pandemic, it is imperative that all emergencies and regular treatment including cardiac should be immediately attended to as it can be life threatening if ignored or postponed.”

THE HEART VALVE CENTRE, A UNIT OF HEARTTEAM INDIA PRESENTS TAVR WORLD TOUR IN ASSOCIATION WITH KAUVERY HOSPITAL & JIOMEET

29th September 2020 : The world today , lives in fear of the coronavirus . People and healthcare workers are overwhelmed with the stress of infection . But there is a more potent killer out there . Something no vaccine can protect you from , no mask can save you from – Heart Disease.

People would do almost anything to avoid going to the hospital during the COVID – 19 pandemic . Unfortunately , that has resulted in many people ignoring the signs of a heart attack . Research shows that people are 17 times more likely to die from a heart attack than from COVID – 19.

In our endeavour to create an awareness and offer rays of hope for a cure , the world’s leading heart specialists from across the globe have come together in a show of solidarity . TAVR World Tour is the first cardiovascular health awareness campaign , comprising of 20 cardiac specialist teams from 20 different cities across the world live on one global platform ( JioMeet ).

The objective is to educate the masses on modern cardiac treatments such as TAVR that is an alternative to conventional open – heart surgeries thereby reducing the recovery time to just 2 days in most cases . This in turn reduces the risks involved under the current circumstances . Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement or TAVR is a less invasive treatment than conventional open heart surgery to replace a heart valve . This campaign is the largest TAVR awareness program ever conducted in the world.

This program is an initiative by The Heart Valve Centre India , a unit of HeartTeam India India’s first nation – wide team of cardiologists lead by Dr. A.B. Gopalamurugan Currently operating out of Kauvery Hospital , Chennai , Dr. A.B. Gopalamurugan , Dr. Prashant Vaijyanath , Dr. Mohamed Abubacker and Dr. Karthik Raj and their team of specialists offer the most advanced Transcatheter valve therapies available in India today . The TAVR world tour was conceived and directed by Dr. A.B. Gopalamurugan and team.

Capturing the spirit of ” one team , one heart , 20 surgical teams from 20 leading medical centres around the globe , with different time zones pledged to stand together to make this record – making global awareness campaign a big success . This event marks a milestone in medical history that 20 medical teams have successfully performed the same procedure across the globe in synchrony :

The event was inaugurated by Dr. C. Vijayabaskar , State Minister of Health and Family Welfare , Govt of Tamil Nadu , who was quoted saying , ” I am proud that the first steps toward creating awareness and advancing cardiovascular treatments in India have been made in Tamil Nadu by Dr. A.B Gopalamurugan and his team and Kauvery Hospital Group.

Dr. Alain Cribier , who is known to have invented the TAVR procedure was one of the panellists among the other renowned doctors from France , Germany , UK , Hungary , Denmark , Qatar , Saudi Arabia , Iraq , China , Thailand , Australia , USA and South America.

Kauvery hospital is proud to be a part of global initiative such as TAVR World Tour . We congratulate The Heart Valve Centre , Heart Team India and Dr. A. B. Gopalamurugan along with the team of medical experts across the world for this feat. Through this compaign, we wish to reiterate that medical emergencies such as cardiac ailments should never be ignored including in this pandemic situations and immediate help should be quickly sought said Dr. Aravindan Selvaraj , Executive Director , Kauvery Hospital , Chennai. Heart disease continues to cause numerous fatalities. Understandably, patients are apprehensive about getting treatment due to the fear of contracting Covid. However, because of this, many heart patients succumb to heart failure, from the lack of proper treatment. We focus on procedures that minimise recovery time, thus reducing the risk of exposure. TAVR is one such treatment that involves relaxing heart valves without conventional open-heart surgery. In most cases, patients can have a heart valve replacement done in an hour and walk out the hospital two days later with no prolonged need for rehabilitation. I am proud to say our team has performed the largest number of TAVR procedures in India, as well as introduced many other treatments in our country and pioneered other first in the world treatments till date. We hope, through this TAVR World Tour campaign, we can alleviate fear and spread awareness on cutting-edge heart treatments available today.”, said Dr. A.B. Gopalamurugan – HeartTeam India, Kauvery Hospital, Chennai.

Noble Hospital challenges CO-RADS -6 Patient fights back to survive without the usage of ventilator

Chennai, 25th September 2020: Noble Hospitals successfully cured a COVID 19 patient where the virus involved 100 percent of her lungs without Ventilator, Patient Ms. Hymavathy, 54 F from Nellore, AP who was diagnosed with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus and completely hand washed from a hospital in Nellore post her COVID diagnosis. Mrs. Hymavathy, however didn’t lose hope and moved to Chennai Nobel Hospital, Purasaiwakkam even after knowing that her health condition was 99% not in a position to cooperate & not with much hope of survival. She got herself admitted in a critical condition in the hospital to get herself treated and now post her treatment the patient is COVID free.

The Hospital also mentioned that the patient was so determined to get herself cured without the usage of the ventilator.

Dr. Balaji Ravilla Baskaran, MBBS, MS – General Surgery, Noble Hospital said, “Both Husband & wife had symptoms of COVID on 25th Aug 2020, however both of them rapidly worsened in 5 days’ time with Mrs. Hymavathi’s white blood cell count dropping to 1500 and CT taken at Nellore showing signs of COVID. On the 6th day after symptoms started, they both were transferred to care in our hospital in Purasaiwakkam, Chennai. Early Sep 2020 Mrs. Hymavathy was in breathless condition requiring oxygen support and her CT chest after admission showed lung involvement of 19/20 that is almost 95 %- portending a worst prognosis. Adding fuel to the fire, Her markers like serum ferritin being above 1000, c reactive protein above 18, interleukin 6 (IL 6) progressively increased from 4 to 202 over next 7 days & Neutophil lymphocyte ratio ( NLR) increased from 2.35 to 8.5 in the same period – all indicating the worst to come.
She rapidly deteriorated from mask oxygen to Venturi mask oxygenation to high flow oxygen & finally non-invasive mask ventilation – stopping just short of ventilator. The family were counselled about almost certain mortality and high supports required which might be futile in her case. We had not entertained any hope about her survival having dealt with about 1500 cases as outpatients since April 2020, out of which 1000 cases were treated as inpatients & Noble Homecare services. Every fibre of our COVID experience says her “Odds of beating this disease was as futile as expecting the sun to rise in the west.”

Her husband meanwhile made a rapid recovery even though he was more obese & relatively less fit than his wife. Mrs. Hymavathi started to lose her grip on her chances of survival and was on verge of giving up her exhaustive breathing schedule. On 9th day after admission we repeated the CT chest and found 20/20 involvement – that is “100 % of lungs were taken” In spite of best anti virals, immune boosters, nutritional support & chest physiotherapy.

Dr. Manodhini, Senior COVID Care Registrar & Dr. Arun, COVID Physician, Noble Hospital mentioned, “Whenever the family asked the question, “How is my mother?”. Our standard answer was,” If there is no deterioration it is an improvement.” Miraculously over a period of 2 weeks since admission she still persisted with her efforts at breathing

without needing a ventilator. There were days she would appear forlorn but she never wavered or panicked. Her greatest motivation was when we lied to her that her husband is also struggling but he said he will continue to fight the disease only if I assured him that his wife is going be alright. That was great morale booster for her. Then she stopped distressing herself with negative emotions & focussed on the job at hand – “To breath in rhythm with the machines 24/7”. All the while her food habits were spot on in spite of oxygen dropping for those 5 mins when we have to take the mask off for oral intake”.

Today on 25 September 2020, 24 days since admission, the virus has now long gone from the body but the ravages in lung remain but she fights on gamely with a smile & sheer determination. She now walks about 50 meters three times a day without oxygen. She does her breathing exercises three times a day and follows a healthy diet of uncooked food like salads, fruits, nuts and dry fruits.

Patient Hymavathi is a perfect example of a human being who didn’t pay attention to forecasts and believed in herself. She completely cooperated with caregivers and physiotherapist. She never wasted her energies worrying and was never overwhelmed by the situations. We have no scientific explanation about why her inflammatory storm didn’t damage her lungs but did for every other person who had half her lung involvement. Her case is an example to always put human spirit above scientific temper!

Compilation of 7 Day EKAM WORLD PEACE FESTIVAL with Sri Krishnaji & Sri Preethaji, Co-Creators of EKAM.

Ekam world peace festival has by far been the world’s largest online Meditation festival with over 10 million people participating in it from across the world. Sri Preethaji and Sri Krishnaji are mystics & philosophers who have co-created Ekam. They have created several amazing spiritual journeys and festivals to celebrate the limitlessness and expansion in consciousness. The peace festival has been happening for the last 3 years. This year beginning on Aug 9th for the past 7-days.. It also was commended by many reputed leaders of the world from various sectors of life.

Each day of the peace festival is held with a specific intention to cause the wholistic wellbeing of mankind, all life forms, and Mother Earth.

Day 1 was for Peace between nations.
Day 2 was Peace for children.
Day 3 was Peace between races and religions.
Day 4 was Peace for nature and wildlife.
Day 5 was Peace for women.
Day 6 was Peace for economic sufficiency.
Day 7, the final day- is Peace for collective human evolution.

The world’s largest peace festival drew to a grand culmination yesterday .

Addressing the millions of peace meditators from across the world Sri Preethaji and Sri Krishnaji said, ” Peace is either for all of us or for none of us. Unless all living beings lived in peace, there can be no peace for humankind. And unless every nation became peaceful there is no peace for any nation. And unless every member of your family became peaceful there is no peace for you”

They revealed the philosophy behind Ekam peace festival, saying, “Ekam magnifies our intention for peace dispelling violence from the collective human consciousness.

On this last day of the peace festival young, old, leaders from various sectors, millions of seekers offered their peace meditation as an offering for world peace. They said – Our future is forked.

We could either go down this road driven by our loveless- self-centred- separation driven consciousness, and destroy our earth- the only home for life, that is as yet discovered. Or choose yet another road open to us which takes humanity to oneness consciousness, from which alone we can find enduring solutions to the problems of our world”.

On this occasion Gregg Braden, a five-time New York Best Selling Author and scientist joined online to interact with Sri Preethaji and Sri Krishnaji. They conversed on science & spirituality, heart and brain, on intention and the one unified field of consciousness. Gregg said – There is a beautiful space where science and spirituality are not alone but come together evolving into something more.

Speaking about the mystic geometrical structure of Ekam, he said – these sacred
geometrical structures are the physical representations of the innate patterns of the atoms in our bodies. When we are in the presence of these sacred structures we awaken our consciousness to powerful states of love and peace. And when they are located on the right geo-energy spots magnetic, crystal and structural energies converge amplifying and accelerating human awakening. And Ekam is such a rare structure.”

Their discussion was insightfully rich and brought a very scientific perspective to the spiritual approach taken during the festival. The grand festival reached its pinnacle receiving great appreciation from over 25million peace meditators, leaders, young, and organisational teams.

To present a few to you:

On day1, Kailash Satyarthi, Nobel peace laureate Conversing with Sri Krishnaji said, every young person should go beyond the division of caste, class, community, and nationality and unite for the most marginalized and vulnerable children of the world. He said every adult must connect to the child within. Connecting to innocence within you will lead to a spontaneous action to protect the children of the world.

On day3, Meng Foon, race relations’ commissioner for human rights from New Zealand appreciated the massive initiative of peace undertaken by Sri Preethaji and Sri Krishnaji. He said, “Racial discrimination affects the social, cultural, and economic wellbeing of the community. Cultivating self-reflection and realizing the pain of others by placing ourselves in another’s shoes will stop us from hurting them.”

On day4, Erik Solheim, a former minister in Norway for the environment and international development, a winner of The Champion of the Earth award, and Time magazine’s Hero of the Environment award joined as the guest. He said – ALL RELIGIONS HAVE METOPHORICALLY COMMUNICATED THE IMPORTANCE OF PROTECTING AND SUSTAINING MOTHER EARTH. If we can realize this connection we would allow Mother Earth to thrive. He also said – I see and believe PM Modi is taking the right steps in that direction too.

On day5, supporting the message on women by Sri Preethaji, Mithali Raj, the Captain of India’s Women’s Cricket Team said – “Peace is necessary and meditation is a sure way to peace. Peace during challenges is when we are mindful and not rush into action when we should not.”

Mithali Raj also said that COVID allowed her to meditate and live in the present. It made her breathe deeper and not keep running into the future anxieties or past regrets. She has enriched her life in the interlude provided by COVID.

On the same day in the evening, Saina Nehwal, World Badminton Champion joined as the guest. Simple and natural in her ways, Saina emphasized remaining calm even though situations are stressful and demanding in one’s life. After meditation with Sri Preethaji, she had experienced a deep state of restfulness in such a short time. She said inner peace has been a critical factor in every single match she has won.

On day6, John L Petersen, a futurist, a speaker, and founder of Arlington University joined as the guest.

Speaking to John, when Sri Krishnaji asked – as a futurologist what new trends do you predict for humanity? He said the world is on the verge of a massive paradigm shift. For the future to open up
grand possibilities, humanity must become self-realized. He acknowledged Sri Preethaji and Sri Krishnaji for guiding mankind in the right direction. They concluded the peace festival by thanking all the supporters and meditators from across the world and inviting everyone to Ekam to experience yet more glorious gifts in consciousness.

Ajinomoto (MSG) is a quality product prepared with natural ingredients

You would have noticed that some delicacies simply taste heavenly! Kikunae Ikeda, a Japanese scientist, found out that the extraordinary
taste in certain dishes comes from Glutamate, an ingredient that occurs naturally in fruits and vegetables. He named it Umami. Is Umami a
blend of different tastes like sweet & sour? Or can we call this the Fifth taste? That, according to Kikunae Ikeda, is entirely up to us.

Ajinomoto, or Mono Sodium Glutamate (MSG), is prepared by the simple process of fermentation, like how we prepare curd from milk. MSG is
prepared with natural vegetable ingredients like sugarcane, sugar-beet or tapioca. The MSG manufactured by the company named Ajinomoto, comes
from sugarcane & tapioca. It has the capacity to enhance the taste of food menu/ dishes. You can add this to sambar, rasam, vegetable fries, soups, and curries – any dishes accept bitter & sweet dishes and make them taste much better.

Ajinomoto, with its headquarters based in Japan, is selling its products all over the world. In order to prove that the product is safe and harmless, we have obtained the highest possible quality clearance in each of these countries. In India it is approve by FSSAI.

Safety certificate is issued in countries like the United States of America, Japan, Thailand and India, only after strict tests. We are marketing the taste enhancer
Mono Sodium Glutamate, AJI-NO-MOTO® (Umami taste enhancer) all over the world. This is manufactured with natural ingredients, and without
adding any chemicals, and hence are good for health. But, the world market is flooded with Chinese and locally manufactured duplicate
products with false labels. The consumers must remain alert about such fraudulently manufactured products and use only genuine MSG. “On our
part, we too are trying our best to take all necessary precautions to remove these duplicate products,” said Mr, Govinda Biswas, Ajinomoto’s Marketing Manager in India.

Mr. Atsushi Mishuku, the Managing Director of Ajinomoto India Private Limited, pointed out that the production factory set up near Kancheepuram, Chennai, provides employment to many, and added that it was necessary in order to distribute and market the products as
swiftly as possible. On the quality of MSG, he said that one of the ingredients, ‘Glutamate,’ is present in mother’s breast milk also. Since it is also present in breast milk, It is safe for consumption of infant also, he said.

Further elaborating, he said, “In addition to Ajinomoto, we also manufacture Happima Fried Rice mix; a complete seasoning to make fried rice;
Blendy, 3-in-1instant coffee and Masala Chai mix; Hapima Crispy Fry Mix to prepare crispy fried restaurant style chicken at home and A&M Noodles.
The market has reacted very encouragingly to these products. With your blessings and support, we would live to grow further and serve you even better,” Mr. Atsushi Mishuku said, confidently.

In the current scenario, a family can sustain itself only when both the husband and wife work. It has become normal for the husbands to buy readymade dough batter for the next day. Since both of them have to leave for work at the same time, preparing food has now become a challenging task. Unfortunately, the current generation has accustomed itself to having their breakfasts in the hotels and lunches at their office canteens.

“Healthy nutritious food” has become unavailable for them. In these tough times, certain fraudulent companies ride on the backs of other products and flood the markets with cheap imitations. 90 percent of the Indian consumers are more interested in procuring items that cost less instead of quality and originality. This is exploited by these fraudulent companies.

We as consumers confront various false information on the internet that consuming Ajinomoto could be hazardous to health, thereby confusing the users. Are those facts true? Only a very few among us take the trouble to find out if such information is true and differentiate between real and fake products.

The Japanese company Ajinomoto is taking earnest steps to counter this negative publicity and false information campaign. At least from this point onwards, instead of blindly believing anything that appears on the internet, we must be able to cultivate the swan’s talent (of separating milk from water) and believe only in the truth.
