Delhi to Chennai, a journey from Despair to Hope ~

Chennai, October 21st, 2020: Gleneagles Global Health City (GGHC), a leading multi-organ transplant centre in Asia successfully performed India’s first liver and kidney transplant during the Covid-19 pandemic with help from two live donors.

35-year-old Mr. Mittal was airlifted to GGHC from Delhi with a medical history of a renal failure & chronic liver problem (fatty liver) which necessitated an urgent need for kidney & liver transplant. During his treatment at a hospital facility in New Delhi, the doctors decided to defer the transplant surgery due to patient’s health condition as he was also suffering from cardiac shock and low BP. However, the family was apprehensive and contacted GGHC’s liver transplant team for a second opinion and decided to get medical treatment at GGHC, Chennai. The entire transit process from Delhi to Chennai was seamlessly co-ordinated as it was highly challenging since the patient had multiple complications and was also obese (130 kgs).

Upon arrival at GGHC, the patient was in an unconscious state with low BP and had to be kept on dialysis. The medical team at GGHC examined him and observed fungal growth in his blood along with other multiple complications and he was therefore admitted in the specialized liver ICU unit for 2 weeks and was provided with necessary supportive medical care including anti-fungal treatment and 24/7 dialysis for 3-4 days. Meanwhile, a complete medical evaluation was carried out on the patient’s wife and sister to assess their viability for being the liver donor and kidney donor respectively.
Speaking about the success of the surgery – Dr Joy Varghese, Director – Hepatology & Transplant Hepatology, Gleneagles Global Health City said “The combined live donor liver & kidney transplant surgery which involved a team of liver, renal and critical care specialists went on for more than 14 hours. After the successful dual organ transplant surgery, patient regained consciousness and later came to know from his family about being airlifted to Chennai and his treatment at GGHC. Patient was discharged from the hospital on the 16th day post surgery. Patient as well as his sister and wife are hale & healthy.”

“This type of complicated surgery was possible only because of dedicated multidisciplinary approach of the hospital. I would like to thank Mr Nitin for being very positive and brave. My special thanks to his wife and sister for their strong will and motivation to save the patient and also trusting us. This case gives a good insight into our culture and great family values in our country and ‘never give up’ attitude by near & dear ones” – stated Dr Rajanikanth Patcha, Clinical Lead – Liver Transplant Surgery, Gleneagles Global Health City.

“We leveraged advanced cardiac output monitoring to improve patient’s blood pressure and removed close to 20 litres of excess fluid from his body. A dedicated team of critical care specialists and nurses made sure that the patient and both the donors remained safe from COVID infection”, said Dr Selvakumar Malleeswaran, Head of Liver ICU – Gleneagles Global Health City.
“We were confronted with many challenges in performing the living donor renal transplant during the pandemic. Both the patient and donor were obese, highest level of infection control measures had to be implemented and there was a need for continuous coordination among multiple consultants, technicians, paramedics & support staff. We faced a big challenge in performing dialysis for the patient with such low BP and had to perform ‘Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy’ before & during the surgery. Taking the best possible pre-surgical precautions, we could do keyhole kidney retrieval from the renal donor and successfully transplant the same into the recipient. In-spite of many odds, kidney started producing urine immediately after implantation. The positivity of the donors and recipient aided in their quick and smooth recovery” – added Dr K Muruganandham, Senior Consultant – Urology and Renal Transplantation Surgeon & Dr P Muthukumar, Senior Consultant – Nephrology & Renal Transplant Physician, Gleneagles Global Health City.

Congratulating the team on the success, Dr Alok Khullar, CEO – Gleneagles Global Health City, Chennai, said “The determination of both donors and their iron strong resolve supported by the extended family to save the life of their loved one were instrumental in motivating the entire team of GGHC to give their best quality care. The multi-disciplinary approach coupled with technical expertise helped us to ensure the success of the surgery despite various challenges. This successful outcome is bound to give hope to many patients with debilitating conditions and complications and help them live healthier lives.”

The pioneering transplant was led by Dr Joy Varghese, Director – Hepatology & Transplant Hepatology, Dr Rajanikanth Patcha, Clinical Lead – Liver Transplant Surgery, Gleneagles Global Health City, Dr Selvakumar Malleeswaran, Head of Liver ICU, Dr K Muruganandham, Senior Consultant – Urology and Renal Transplantation Surgeon & Dr P Muthukumar, Senior Consultant – Nephrology & Renal Transplant Physician”.

Chennai 9th October 2020: Kauvery Hospital, Chennai’s leading multi-specialty hospital, successfully performed the India’s first single stage hybrid coronary revascularisation procedure on a 44-year-old male from Nesapakkam.

Mr. Ramesh V, had visited Kauvery Hospital with a history of heart attack, blockage in multiple arteries and limited heart function of 30%, which required immediate surgical intervention. Traditionally, blood flow in patients with multiple coronary blockage is restored by coronary artery bypass grafting surgery (CABG) through sternotomy (Opening Breast Bone) which requires longer recuperation time at the hospital and increased risk of infection, especially during a pandemic.

Speaking about performing the India’s first Hybrid revascularization procedure, Dr. R Anantharaman, Senior Consultant Interventional Cardiologist said, “Undertaking a complex procedure and enabling the patient to walk back home within a span of two to three days is a huge step in treatment and provides a lot of hope for patients with such conditions. We at Kauvery Hospitals were able to perform this with the aid of the Hybrid Cath Lab thereby minimizing the risks, as only such a facility can facilitate the procedure to be performed in a single stage both surgery and stenting at the same time.

We made a small cut (3-4 cm) on the left side of chest through which the main bypass grafting for the left coronary artery was performed. After the successful completion of bypass surgery, its functioning was checked by angiography, which was followed by angioplasty and stenting to the right coronary artery. The same procedure was subsequently performed on two more patients – Mr. Sanjay, aged 54 years and Mrs. Narmadha M, aged 70 years. All the patients were discharged within a span of two to three days.”

Speaking on the success of the case, Dr. Aravindan Selvaraj, Executive Director, Kauvery Hospital, Chennai, said, “I would like to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Dr. R Anantharaman and his team for setting a benchmark in India’s medical history by performing a minimally invasive hybrid revascularization procedure in a single stage. The Hybrid Cath Lab at Kauvery Hospital has ushered in many revolutionary procedures and helping in faster recovery for our patients. We always commit ourselves to bring in the latest technologies to provide the best possible treatment at all times. In this pandemic, it is imperative that all emergencies and regular treatment including cardiac should be immediately attended to as it can be life threatening if ignored or postponed.”

Office transactions across prime cities surge by 80% Q-o-Q; new office completion recovers by 126% in Q3 2020: Knight Frank India – Chennai office transactions report the recovery of 0.07 mn sqm in Q3 2020; Rentals increase by 0.5% YoY: Knight Frank India

~Four of the top eight markets witness stable or positive rent growth~

Mumbai, 8th October 2020: Knight Frank India, leading international property consultancy, today launched its quarterly report – India Real Estate Update – Q3 2020 – which presents an analysis of the residential and office market performance across top eight cities for the July-September 2020 (Q3 2020) period. In comparison with Q2 2020, the report observed gross office leasing across these cities witnessed a strong recovery, registering 80% growth to 0.44 mn sqm in Q3 2020. Whereas new office completions during the same period, reported recovery of 126% to 0.33 mn sqm, compared to Q2 2020.

As Q2 2020 was marred by lockdown, the report cited the need to evaluate commercial market recovery compared to pre-COVID levels. Thus, besides looking at a single period, i.e. Quarter on Quarter analysis, Knight Frank India established a comparative matrix of Q3 2020 recovery against the quarterly average number of transactions in the year 2019.

The total office transactions of the eight markets in Q3 2020 have improved and reached 33% of the 2019 quarterly average level. Chennai, National Capital Region (NCR), and Mumbai recorded higher recovery in Q3 2020 with transactions reaching the level of 57%, 43%, and 42% respectively of the quarterly average of the year 2019. New completions also improved to 29% of the 2019 quarterly average. In terms of new completions in Q3 2020, Ahmedabad was the only market to report higher new office completions, 125% of quarterly average levels of the year 2019.

In terms of rental values, the recovery in office transactions and new completions helped rental values remain stable in Bengaluru (4%) followed by Hyderabad (2%), Chennai (0.5%), and Pune with 0% Year-on-Year growth (YoY).

Source: Knight Frank Research

According to Shishir Baijal, Chairman and Managing Director, Knight Frank India, “The commercial office asset class performance for the third quarter have been encouraging especially when benchmarked against quarterly average of 2019 as office transactions were at a historic high in that year. At the beginning of the pandemic in India, businesses were compelled to move to work from home as a business continuity process method. The uncertain business environment that followed the initial lockdown, further caused occupiers to assess their office space strategies leading many to postpone their office expansion plans till Q2 2020. However, with the unlocking in progress, going forward as India edges back economic recovery, the office market dynamics are also expected to improve. The recent success of REITs can be understood as an indicator of long – term confidence of investors for office space.”

Rajani Sinha, Chief Economist & National Director – Research, Knight Frank India said, “While work from home as a concept has proved to be an effective business continuity measure; we expect occupiers to look at office space usage more strategically. This will lead to further innovation in effective to include aspects like social – distancing, health benefits, sustainability as well as preparedness for future contingencies. We expect the momentum of the transaction to accelerate in the near future.”

  • 1) Chennai, Kolkata, NCR and Mumbai recorded relatively better recovery in transactions in Q3 2020 compared to the other markets.
  • 2) While in Q3 2020, transactions in Bengaluru reached 30% of 2019 quarterly average level, the market still experienced the highest transaction at 1.1 mn sq ft and rent growth at 4% YoY.
  • 3) Ahmedabad was the only market to see office completions exceeding transactions during Q3 2020, causing rents to fall by a substantial 5% YoY.

‘BORN IN BHARAT’ – Pride of the PAST, Growth for the PRESENT, and Vision for the FUTURE!

~ More than 4000 professionals and enthusiasts on a collective effort towards ‘Nation Building’

Conceptualised and carefully curated by Seshu Karthik – an Entrepreneur by heart, the campaign revolves around building a better Nation for tomorrow with a collective effort from each one of us. ‘BORN IN BHARAT’ started as a single idea of bringing people together for the Nation and evolved into a broader holistic initiative considering the past, present, and future. It aims to function in three stages – take pride of the past glories of the country, drive growth for today’s progress, and create a vision for a stronger tomorrow.

Launched on 14th September 2020. The campaign instantly caught the eyes of the citizens and earned more than 3500 tweets on the launch day. It was national trending on Twitter for 3-4 hours. It has taken the approach to Empower Individuals to build an Empowered Nation.

‘BORN IN BHARAT’ was launched in association with Bhumi Organization and Young Indians Chennai. The launch campaign encouraged people to be part of Nation building with a 2-prong approach. First, people are encouraged to snap and share a photo of a Bharat moment. This ignites a conversation about the Nation. Next, people are prompted to do their bit and create an impact. There are 3 suggested ways to create an immediate impact – Lead, Contribute and Participate.

‘BORN IN BHARAT’ aims to provide technology and digital mediums to bring in collaborative growth avenues for people in various verticals and age groups. It also offers growth avenues for students to hone their skills or finding work opportunities, hence enabling a stronger tomorrow for the country.
The team had also launched an emotion evoking video with questions we all should answer to ourselves. This is being followed by BHARAT POLL in which several hundred people participated to express how they can contribute to Nation-building.

The ‘Solve for Bharat’ aspect of this initiative has invited ideas to solve some trivial and serious situations in our Nation. The problem statements include day-to-day situations like optimised water consumption, reduction in plastic wastes, cycle-friendly cities and small yet critical topics like traffic regulation near schools, dining experience in college canteens, freeing the aisle in aircrafts, etc.

“We believe that a Nation’s prosperity is the collective prosperity of its people. The objective is to strengthen the aspects of Pride, Growth, and Vision to the people of Bharat. To begin the journey towards Nation-building, let us together choose the Give-First approach… followed by Growth-Next activities.” – Seshu Karthick, the ideator of this initiative

Noble Hospital challenges CO-RADS -6 Patient fights back to survive without the usage of ventilator

Chennai, 25th September 2020: Noble Hospitals successfully cured a COVID 19 patient where the virus involved 100 percent of her lungs without Ventilator, Patient Ms. Hymavathy, 54 F from Nellore, AP who was diagnosed with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus and completely hand washed from a hospital in Nellore post her COVID diagnosis. Mrs. Hymavathy, however didn’t lose hope and moved to Chennai Nobel Hospital, Purasaiwakkam even after knowing that her health condition was 99% not in a position to cooperate & not with much hope of survival. She got herself admitted in a critical condition in the hospital to get herself treated and now post her treatment the patient is COVID free.

The Hospital also mentioned that the patient was so determined to get herself cured without the usage of the ventilator.

Dr. Balaji Ravilla Baskaran, MBBS, MS – General Surgery, Noble Hospital said, “Both Husband & wife had symptoms of COVID on 25th Aug 2020, however both of them rapidly worsened in 5 days’ time with Mrs. Hymavathi’s white blood cell count dropping to 1500 and CT taken at Nellore showing signs of COVID. On the 6th day after symptoms started, they both were transferred to care in our hospital in Purasaiwakkam, Chennai. Early Sep 2020 Mrs. Hymavathy was in breathless condition requiring oxygen support and her CT chest after admission showed lung involvement of 19/20 that is almost 95 %- portending a worst prognosis. Adding fuel to the fire, Her markers like serum ferritin being above 1000, c reactive protein above 18, interleukin 6 (IL 6) progressively increased from 4 to 202 over next 7 days & Neutophil lymphocyte ratio ( NLR) increased from 2.35 to 8.5 in the same period – all indicating the worst to come.
She rapidly deteriorated from mask oxygen to Venturi mask oxygenation to high flow oxygen & finally non-invasive mask ventilation – stopping just short of ventilator. The family were counselled about almost certain mortality and high supports required which might be futile in her case. We had not entertained any hope about her survival having dealt with about 1500 cases as outpatients since April 2020, out of which 1000 cases were treated as inpatients & Noble Homecare services. Every fibre of our COVID experience says her “Odds of beating this disease was as futile as expecting the sun to rise in the west.”

Her husband meanwhile made a rapid recovery even though he was more obese & relatively less fit than his wife. Mrs. Hymavathi started to lose her grip on her chances of survival and was on verge of giving up her exhaustive breathing schedule. On 9th day after admission we repeated the CT chest and found 20/20 involvement – that is “100 % of lungs were taken” In spite of best anti virals, immune boosters, nutritional support & chest physiotherapy.

Dr. Manodhini, Senior COVID Care Registrar & Dr. Arun, COVID Physician, Noble Hospital mentioned, “Whenever the family asked the question, “How is my mother?”. Our standard answer was,” If there is no deterioration it is an improvement.” Miraculously over a period of 2 weeks since admission she still persisted with her efforts at breathing

without needing a ventilator. There were days she would appear forlorn but she never wavered or panicked. Her greatest motivation was when we lied to her that her husband is also struggling but he said he will continue to fight the disease only if I assured him that his wife is going be alright. That was great morale booster for her. Then she stopped distressing herself with negative emotions & focussed on the job at hand – “To breath in rhythm with the machines 24/7”. All the while her food habits were spot on in spite of oxygen dropping for those 5 mins when we have to take the mask off for oral intake”.

Today on 25 September 2020, 24 days since admission, the virus has now long gone from the body but the ravages in lung remain but she fights on gamely with a smile & sheer determination. She now walks about 50 meters three times a day without oxygen. She does her breathing exercises three times a day and follows a healthy diet of uncooked food like salads, fruits, nuts and dry fruits.

Patient Hymavathi is a perfect example of a human being who didn’t pay attention to forecasts and believed in herself. She completely cooperated with caregivers and physiotherapist. She never wasted her energies worrying and was never overwhelmed by the situations. We have no scientific explanation about why her inflammatory storm didn’t damage her lungs but did for every other person who had half her lung involvement. Her case is an example to always put human spirit above scientific temper!

Singer-Songwriter Zoe Siddharth from Chennai releases her debut single, “Human” On Monday 21st September 2020

Singer songwriter Zoe Siddharth from Chennai released her debut single, “Human” on Monday 21st September 2020. Mentored by Monica Dogra, Devraj Sanyal of Universal Music India, Ehsaan Noorani and Vishal Dadlani, Zoe Siddharth was the finalist on “The Stage 3” (India’s only nation-wide English singing talent hunt).

She believes that music connects one another and strives to be as honest, real and raw as can be to spread positivity, love and confidence through music. Her songs, speak her truth, tell stories that spread uplifting messages intended for the listeners. This world has so much negativity and hence, with her music, Zoe wants to create a safe happy space, for people to find solace in, even if it’s just for a while.

Empathy, love, kindness, emotions and feelings, these combined make us human. Sometimes in our lives, things take bad turns – these harsh times however, have the ability to take so much from us till everything goes numb, we are unable to feel anything, lose the quality of our being. These are the moments when we need those people who stay, reach their hands out into our darkness and pull us back up, to help us feel again, be human again! The video depicts just that, with subtle details that show deeper meanings. When was the last time we appreciated our friends or family for the smallest or the biggest gestures they have made? Our loved ones, friends and family – our support system – are the real heros.

“This song is to all the people who have stuck by me through it all. I appreciate you. I hope ‘Human’ takes the listener on a journey of appreciation and gratefulness for the people who love them and have their backs. They’re all anyone really needs”, said the singer.

‘Simplify the Complicated: Breaking down the whys and hows of life’: Colors Tamil In conversation with Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

Chennai, 29 August, 2020: “If you can win over your mind, you can win over the whole world”, says global spiritual master and humanitarian, Gurudev Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. In these unprecedented times of crisis fraught with stress, anxiety and uncertainty, COLORS Tamil in association with The Art of Living, has set out to bring a message of peace, wisdom and positivity for all the viewers across Tamil Nadu.

In a thought-provoking fireside chat, Gurudev Sri Sri Ravishankar and Mr. Anup Chandrasekharan, Business Head – COLORS Tamil, conversed about ways to simplify life’s many complications, with Gurudev offering deeply meaningful insights that uplifted the minds of the viewers on topics ranging from mental health, isolation, strenuous relationships, ways and techniques to handle a restless and anxious mind, among others.

“I urge everyone to believe in a power that is over looking all of us, Gurudev said during the interaction, “It will guide and protect us. This is a sense instilled by spirituality. There should be unshakable faith in this power. This will give us psychological strength.” Here’s a snapshot of the enlightening conversation:

Anup:  Work from home has become the new norm. However, more than convenience this work situation has added stress. Especially for women professionals, it is a challenging time to balance work and personal life under one roof. How do we keep our body and mind calm during these times?

Gurudev: Rewind a little bit and think about the world around 30 years back.  We did not have access to modern technology and we didn’t have internet connections. Television was just making its way into our homes. We had to step out for work in order to survive. Now imagine COVID had struck us during a time like that.  We would be much more anxious and stressed. So the positive outlook in today’s situation is that we have the boon of technology making our life a lot safer and easier. Think of this situation as World War -3 with an invisible enemy. We have to divert all our energy in understanding and analysing the intensity of our personal challenges. We should strongly believe that this uncertainty is momentary; we have to be patient and look at the positives.

After a long time, there is a situation for families to spend more time at home. This was rare before. It is normal for personalities to clash, we have to keep an open mind and accommodate each other’s needs. Our tolerance level should increase. Our creative impulses should be heightened.

We should have the patience and a mindset to win in these challenging times.  Focus our mind towards meditation and entertainment activities. This will give us the calmness we seek and strengthen our mind.

Anup: Being with family during these times has heightened our insecurities and fear about future, job and life in general. What are your thoughts on this Gurudev?

Gurudev: We have to develop our self confidence during these uncertain times. This will help us win over anxiety. Even before COVID, uncertainty and anxiety were part of our everyday life. Take share market investors, entrepreneurs and people from the tourism and travel industry, they are facing a really challenging time now. One of the highly impacted ones from this pandemic is our daily wage workers from the unorganized sector.

However, COVID has presented an opportunity for people to come together and help each other. Many organizations and the society in general have come forward to offer timely support to those in need. This is a wonderful opportunity for us to help and be there for each other.

Anup: Our ambitions have taken a back seat looking at the current situation. A wish for leading conservative life is creeping in and people are willing to leave behind the rat-race for a simple life pursuing farming etc. Is this the right thought process?

Gurudev: It’s a good direction to lead your life. But, I urge everyone to see this as a big opportunity. Every crisis is an opportunity to improve self-sufficiency. This will help our nation grow. It is also an important time for us to understand the balance between being over-ambitious and having no ambition at all. If an opportunity presents itself in an uncertain time, grab it.

Anup: There is plenty of negative emotions and news being spread around us. How do you fight these thoughts?

Gurudev: Journalism has got big responsibilities. First and foremost, present facts as they are. Sometimes it might be gloom and that is when their second responsibility comes in play – to re-kindle hope. Report more of inspirational, soft stories which will help spread positivity. It will strengthen the faith in our society. We should learn to balance negative and positive news.

Anup: COVID has pushed many in a situation where they feel abandoned by friends and family. We hear stories of elderly not able to get timely support from their close circle of people. This made me think about who really are our good friends and our one enemy. What are your thoughts on this Guruji?

Gurudev: COVID is not the only time when the people have felt lonely. There are many situations in our day to day life where family members live countries apart and are not able to support each other in time. But I urge everyone to believe in a power that is over looking all of us. It will guide and protect us. This is a sense instilled by spirituality. There should be unshakable faith in this power. This will give us psychological strength. Depression rates are increasing around the world. Especially amongst teachers, depression rates are alarming. This situation can be handled through meditation, breathing techniques and help us in leading a peaceful life.
