September 12th 2019, Chennai: The Institution of Engineers (India) (IEI) is the largest multidisciplinary professional body that encompasses 15 engineering disciplines and gives engineers a global platform from which to share professional interest Established in 1920, with its Headquarters at 8 Gokhale Road, Kolkata-700020, IEI has served the engineering fraternity for over nine decades. IEI was formally inaugurated by Sir R N Mookerjee, President of IEI (1920-21) on 23rd February 1921 in the presence of His Excellency Lord Chelmsford, Viceroy of India at a function held at the Asiatic Society, Kolkata. Later, in 1935, IEI was incorporated by Royal Charter and remains the only professional body in India to be accorded this honour.
Activities of the Institution:
In this period of time it has been inextricably linked with the history of modern-day engineering. IEI provides a vast array of technical, professional and supporting services to the Government, Industries, Academia and the Engineering fraternity, operating from 123 Centres located across the country. In addition to that IEI has 6 Overseas Chapters and more than 500 Institutional Members, mostly the Engineering Colleges and Universities all over the country. Besides the above there are seven entities Safety & Quality Forum, Sustainable Development Forum, National Design & Research Forum, Water Management Forum, Rural Development Forum, National Skill Development Forum, and Engineering Staff College of India, who regularly conduct continuing education programmes and awareness generation activities on contemporary issues.
IEI conducts Section A & B Examinations in different Engineering disciplines since 1928, the successful completion of which is recognized as equivalent to Degree in appropriate field of Engineering of recognized Universities of India – Including the Department of Scientific & Industrial Research, Ministry of Science & Technology, Govt of India, has recognized IEI as a Scientific & Industrial Research Organization (SIRO) by virtue of its contribution in the area of scientific and industrial research. IEI regularly publishes 5 Scopus-indexed journals through co-publishing agreement with reputed publishing house Springer Nature Ltd. The Institution of Engineers (India) organizes the prestigious Indian Engineering Congress every year since 1987 and also presents The IEI Industry Excellence Awards to leading industries of the country.
Inauguration of Centenary Celebrations:
The Institution of Engineers (India) is entering into its Centenary year of service to the Nation. This momentous event is being marked by a number of Seminars to be conducted in India and abroad. The event will be culminating in the Global Engineering Congress in 2020. To usher in the next Century, the Inaugural Ceremony is being held in Hotel Le Royal Meridien Chennai on 13 September 2019. Dr. T M Gunaraja, President of the Institution of Engineers (India) will welcome the gathering. The Inaugural function would be graced by Shri Banwarilal Purohit, Hon’ble Governor of Tamilnadu as Chief Guest. Shri K Pandiarajan, Hon’ble Minister for Tamil Official Language, Tamil Culture and Archaeology, Government of Tamilnadu would be the Guest of Honour. A key-note speech on the theme “Transforming Engineering Education: The Centennial Imperative” would be delivered by Prof Anil D Sahasrabudhe, Chairman AICTE. A Special Achievement Award would be bestowed on Dr Marlene Kanga, President, World Federation of Engineering Organizations. Also, Dr E Sreedharan, an eminent engineer, would be felicitated on this occasion. This event is organised by Tamil Nadu State Centre Chairman Er. R. Ramdoss and Honorary Secretary Er. P. Gomathi Nayagam and the Committee. The event will be attended by a large galaxy of distinguished engineers and Past Presidents of the Institution who would also be felicitated on this occasion. During this occasion two Books ‘A Century of Service to the Nation’ and Souvenir of Centenary Celebration would be released by Hon’ble Governor of Tamilnadu.
