• Subiksha features a fully equipped Level-3 NICU, advanced fetal diagnostics, and round-the-clock multidisciplinary maternal and neonatal care.
Chennai, 2nd December 2025: Rainbow Children’s Hospital, India’s leading Pediatric multi-specialty and perinatal care hospital chain, today announced the launch of Subiksha – a Comprehensive High-Risk Pregnancy Unit at its Anna Nagar facility. This follows the strong success of its flagship high-risk pregnancy unit in Guindy and comes at a time when Tamil Nadu, despite being one of India’s best-performing maternal health states is witnessing a consistent rise in high-risk pregnancies due to lifestyle factors, delayed pregnancies, diabetes, hypertension, thyroid disorders, and previous complicated pregnancies.
According to national data, nearly 50% of pregnancies in India are now categorised as high-risk, underscoring the urgent need for specialised care. While Tamil Nadu’s maternal mortality rate is among the lowest in India, further reduction will require advanced, coordinated, multidisciplinary care for high-risk mothers, something Rainbow aims to strengthen through this expansion.
The newly launched unit in Anna Nagar brings together maternal-fetal medicine specialists, obstetricians, diabetologists, cardiologists, endocrinologists, neonatologists, fetal medicine experts, and critical care teams under one roof, ensuring seamless care for both mother and baby. The name “Subiksha”, meaning prosperity, safety, and wellbeing, represents Rainbow’s commitment to ensuring that every mother, regardless of risk, experiences a safe, smooth, and supported pregnancy journey. The unit has been conceptualized to address the rising burden of high-risk pregnancies in Tamil Nadu and contribute to further reducing maternal and neonatal complications across the state.
The new High-Risk Pregnancy & NICU unit is designed to manage even the most complicated pregnancies with round-the-clock access to a Level-3 NICU, high-dependency units, advanced fetal monitoring, emergency obstetric support, and a full multidisciplinary team. This coordinated approach ensures immediate care for newborns requiring advanced support, while keeping mother and baby in a continuous, safe care environment.
Subiksha is supported by a highly skilled and experienced specialist team dedicated to managing complex and high-risk pregnancies with precision and compassion. The unit will be led by Dr. V K Shantha and Dr. Shobana Rajendran, senior clinicians with extensive expertise in maternal-fetal medicine and high-risk obstetrics. They are joined by a multidisciplinary group of specialists including Dr. Anuradha, Dr. Sunitha, Dr. Logaprabhu Nandhini, and Dr. Nikitha Bojja, who bring strong experience in managing pregnancies complicated by diabetes, hypertension, thyroid disorders, fetal growth restriction, multiple gestations and prior pregnancy losses.
Sharing her views, Dr. V K Shantha, Senior Consultant – Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, Rainbow Children’s Hospital said, “High-risk pregnancies require timely detection, expert intervention, and seamless coordination between multiple specialists. With Subiksha, we are able to provide end-to-end care for mothers with conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, thyroid disorders, autoimmune issues, multiple gestations, and previous pregnancy complications. Our approach is personalised, evidence-based, and focused on ensuring a safe and smooth delivery for every mother, regardless of the complexity of her pregnancy.”
Adding to this, Dr. Shobana Rajendran, Senior Consultant – General Pediatrics & Neonatology, Rainbow Children’s Hospital, said “The strength of Subiksha lies in its collaborative model, our neonatology team works closely with obstetricians and fetal medicine specialists from the very beginning, allowing us to anticipate risks early and stabilize newborns without delay. This coordinated mother-baby approach dramatically improves outcomes and ensures that every child receives the highest standard of neonatal care.”
Adding to this, Mr. Bhaskar Reddy, Zonal Director – TN & AP, Rainbow Children’s Hospital said “The launch of this unit reflects our commitment to expanding specialised maternal and neonatal services for families in Anna Nagar and beyond. Our goal is to ensure that no mother has to travel long distances for advanced care during a high-risk pregnancy. By bringing together obstetricians, maternal-fetal medicine experts, and neonatologists under one roof, we are creating a truly integrated care environment that puts the safety of mother and baby first.”
The unit is equipped to handle diverse and complex pregnancy conditions, including gestational diabetes, hypertension, thyroid disorders, multiple gestations, fetal growth restriction, maternal cardiac conditions, autoimmune disorders, and pregnancies complicated by previous losses or preterm births. It also includes high-resolution fetal imaging, fetal echocardiography, genetic counselling, antenatal surveillance, and collaborative care between maternal and neonatal specialists to ensure the best outcomes.
The unit was inaugurated by Thiru. M.K. Mohan, Hon’ble MLA, Anna Nagar Constituency, who presided as the Chief Guest along with Dr. V K Shantha, Senior Consultant – Obstetrician & Gynaecologist, Rainbow Children’s Hospital and Dr. Shobana Rajendran, Senior Consultant – General Pediatrics & Neonatology, Rainbow Children’s Hospital.
